2021: Note 40 -- The Beach House Host

I'm not much of a beach person. So when a longtime friend invited a couple of us to join her at her beach rental, I was hesitant. The list of excuses was long. I'm starting a new job and will be too busy getting ready. I haven't had time off in between jobs in years and want to spend it all with my family. It went on, finally ending with an admission that a true Philadelphian shouldn't say, "I don't really like the Jersey shore."

My friend persisted, in a caring and gentle way. She said we didn't have to sit around on the beach. In fact, her place was across from a bird sanctuary where you can kayak and view the wildlife. She promised we'd do lots of walking. And, she reminded me -- there's always plenty to talk about.

I am so grateful that she invited me and encouraged me to come. There were three of us -- old college friends -- and we have an easy, comfortable connection. We did all the fun things my friend said we would, and the visit made me rethink my view of what a beach weekend could be. More importantly, it reminded me that where you are isn't nearly as important as whom you're with.
