Week 9: My Walking Partner

Five years ago, I made a commitment to participate in a 3-day walking event with a friend. The two of us knew each other, but we weren't that close...yet.

Things changed once we started our early morning training walks. Initial conversations were about work and family. Then we talked about books -- what we liked and why. When we read the same book, we could cover 5 miles while talking about it. Things we read opened up many other areas of conversation.

We've done the 3-day walk twice in the past five years. The event is a bonding experience, but for us it was all the preparation that made us close.

Earlier this year, my walking buddy moved to a different area. Not far, but no longer close enough to walk before work or meet up for a quick couple of miles when we both had free time.

I miss our walks, so I was delighted when we both recently had a day off and spent it together walking in the city. It was like usual, talking about anything and everything. I am so thankful that she chose to use a day off to spend with me, and I know she feels the same, We're sometimes walking buddies, and forever friends.
