About six years ago, I met a fellow high school parent at a marching band event. We were friendly toward each other, but I assumed it was one of those situational friendships that goes away when your kids graduate.

Lucky me, I was wrong!

When we first met, I was working crazy hours, one of my closest friends was dying and another had moved across the country. I seriously needed a new friend. She sensed this, and she befriended me.

We go walking together. We're in a book club. We go shopping. We talk about more than our kids. In short, we've developed a genuine friendship. This week, I'm sending a corny note to this woman to say "thank you for being a friend."
