It's baking season! In my house that means lots of butter, chocolate and other goodies, my mixer whirring constantly and the smell of cookies everywhere. I love baking and giving cookies to neighbors, friends, family and coworkers.

This week, my thank you note went to the baking master who sparked my interest in cookie baking and has been my inspiration since elementary school. I had a close friend who lived down the block, so I was at her house a lot. Her mother was frequently in the kitchen making cookies. She could make many different kinds -- all delicious!

Watching this woman bake was mesmerizing. She used a big, standing mixer, which I had never seen before...and she had a second freezer in her basement to store everything. Twenty-eight years ago I got one of those mixers, and I've been baking and perfecting recipes ever since.

A friend watching me bake said I have a "happy baking face" when I'm at work in my kitchen. With my freezer currently filled with boxes of biscotti, fig pinwheels and other cookies, it's time I thanked her and let her know she's my cookie role model.
