A close friend of mine lives across the country. We have a strong bond, and she is close with my husband and young adult daughter as well.
This week, she demonstrated the depth of that connection, when she took vacation from work and flew across the country to attend my daughter's college music composition recital.
Composing classical music is complex, and my friend felt strongly that she should be there to experience it in person. She wanted to hear the performance, to read the program notes explaining the symbolism of the music, to be part of the standing ovation, and to tear up with pride and happiness.
Many family members and friends are supportive of my daughter, and I appreciate all of them. This friend, who spent money and time to be here, went above and beyond. I'm grateful to have a friend who cares so much about me and my family and showed it in such a big way.
