I work for a large company that has many divisions and offices. My company, like many, has been taking steps to build a more diverse workforce and foster an inclusive environment. We've set up Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) steering committees around the globe. These teams set priorities and plan training programs and events in support of our I&D mission.
The committee in North America met for the first time a little over a week ago. One of our first questions was: "February is Black History Month, how should we recognize this across our offices?" That is not an easy question to answer...especially since February had already started.
That's when the "get it done" leaders stepped in. Two people who are committed to strengthening I&D across the company said they would take the lead on Black History Month. And so they did....
Less than a week later, a beautiful email about Black History Month being a way to recognize the significant contributions of Black / African Americans was in every employee's mailbox. It came from a central company mailbox that I didn't even know existed. These two people found the right contacts, got the necessary permissions and sent the message. They have additional messages and a "lunch and learn" event planned as well.
They didn't wait for someone to hold their hands or tell them what to do. They just started working and figured it out, on top of their normal workload. I'm thankful to both of them and to my company for having such talented, dedicated, make it happen people.
