Week 37: The Cousin Who Is A Friend

I have a cousin who is a few years older than me. We grew up in different cities and saw each other occasionally as we were growing up. I always liked her and looked up to her, but she was older and it was before the era of social media, so our contact was infrequent.

Then we became moms -- each to an only child, a daughter. Both our families were looking for people to go on vacation with so that our girls had a playmate. We decided to go to the beach together.

We had visions of our daughters becoming close friends, but it was actually the two of us who grew close. We have a lot in common and we enjoy talking about all sorts of things together.

We still live far apart (farther now than when we grew up). Recently, my family took a road trip and we stayed with my cousin and her husband for a couple of nights. We had a great time being with them.

My cousin is smart, funny and kind. She is a good talker AND a good listener. I'm happy to call her cousin...and I'm grateful to call her friend.
