Ever heard people say starting a new job is like drinking from a fire hose? Try starting a new job in a new field when you're in your late 50s.
No matter how much experience you bring to the role or how quickly you learn, this is a big undertaking that could easily overwhelm someone.

Last fall, I left a company I had been with for a number of years, in an industry I've worked in for too many years to count, to try something new. With retirement age getting closer, it felt like a now or never moment.
I am so glad I made the change. The new job – while very different from my prior work – requires a lot of the same skills. But there is no way I would have made it through the transition period without the incredible support of my new colleagues.
Busy with their own work, four people in particular helped make sure I came through the onboarding process smoothly. One person met with me every week as my "onboarding buddy" and talked me through all the nuances of the company and how we work. She deserves a medal for all the time and support she provided!
All four of them welcomed me onto the team, answered all of my questions, and were generous with their time. What started as helping the newbie on the team has developed into genuine camaraderie and collaboration. They made that fire hose more of a high pressure lawn sprayer!
I am so grateful for the help they provided and the ongoing connection we have.
