Week 8: The Piano Man

We have an old piano. It's been in our family since my mom was a little girl. My sister and I learned to play on that piano, and I love everything about it. The keys, the wood...the sound.
What I didn't know until we moved the piano to my house is how much goes into maintaining an older instrument like this. They get dried out (just like people!) and they need a lot of TLC. Depending on the instrument, it can go way beyond an annual tuning.
In the case or our baby grand, the soundboard started to crack and we needed to install a humidity control device to keep it from drying out. I now water the piano, just like I water the plants.
It's thanks to an ace piano technician who learned the craft from his father that our piano is in good shape and continues to sound beautiful. Of course it sounds better when my daughter and her fellow university music students play than it does when I do, but that's not the piano's fault!
Thank you, piano man, for keeping our baby going.
