On Monday, I was driving to work, thinking about a close friend who lost a loved one in the synagogue shooting. As I drove along the road, I passed a beautiful house that I see on my commute. I always notice the place and think how lovely it is.

That day, I noticed something that I never paid attention to before: there was a flagpole, and the flag was at half mast.

I have no idea who lives there or how they were affected by the situation. But their flag at half mast -- that sign of respect for others -- helped me.

So those people, in suburban Philadelphia, are the recipients of note #1 from me.
